Volunteer at IISC

Throughout the year, the IISC offers numerous volunteering opportunities for brothers and sisters in Calgary. Almost all the programs, activities, and events of the IISC are run by volunteers like you, under the guidance of our esteemed Imams and the supervisions of experienced volunteer coordinators.

Why Volunteer

Volunteering holds significant importance in Islam, reflecting the core principles of compassion, generosity, and community welfare embedded in the faith. In Islam, charitable acts, including volunteering, are considered a form of worship and an expression of one's gratitude to Allah. Allah says in the Quran:

وَتَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ ۚ

"Cooperate with one another in goodness and righteousness, and do not cooperate in sin and transgression"

[Surah Ma’idah, Ayah 2]

Giving Back

Numerous such verses and ahadith talk about the importance and the virtue of giving back to the community. Volunteering aligns with the Islamic principle of "sadaqah," or voluntary charity, which extends beyond material donations to include the selfless contribution of time and effort.

The Prophet Muhammad [P.B.U.H.] said:

خير الناس من أنفعهم للناس

"The best of people are those who are most beneficial to people."

[Sahih al-Jami' 3289]

What it Means to Volunteer

Islam places a strong emphasis on social justice and caring for the less fortunate. Volunteering becomes a practical manifestation of these values, allowing individuals to actively address societal issues and contribute to the well-being of others. Prophet Muhammad [P.B.U.H.] himself set a profound example by engaging in acts of kindness and community service. His teachings encourage Muslims to serve humanity, promoting a sense of unity and shared responsibility. Volunteering in Islam is seen as a means to foster empathy, strengthen community bonds, and cultivate a sense of purpose rooted in the principles of justice and compassion.
